Gods Goodness Runs After Us

On Sunday Graham spoke about two pictures he had based on the song 'Goodness of God' and we can see the line 'running after me'.

Graham shares:
As we were singing those words, your goodness is running after, running after me, your goodness is running, it’s running after me. I was contemplating the words as we sang them. I had two different images in my mind. I don’t know, may be my brain works differently or may be this was the image in your head too.

The first image was of God’s goodness literally running after me, like literally chasing me down the street trying to catch up. God saying “Here, I’m here” so God’s goodness literally running after us, trying to catch us up.

The second picture I saw was of God’s goodness, running, almost running out of us, wherever we went. God’s goodness was flowing out of us!

I’m not sure which of those two images the writers of this song had in mind when they wrote it, they may have been thinking about something completely different. I just felt however that this was for us this morning friends, that both images are true.

So, God’s goodness, His presence, His very nearness, runs after us, chases us. God knows that we need Him, He runs after us! But also, wherever we go, wherever you go, God’s goodness flows out of you. His presence flows from you into every situation. So, this morning, if you’re feeling – I'm not very full of God’s goodness, His presence, His nearness, that’s OK, because He’s running after you. But if you are thinking, oh, actually, I’ve got a sense of God’s presence, I feel His nearness, His closeness, His goodness. Then God wants you to know that wherever you go this week, whatever you do, whatever conversations you’re in, be that in your home or in your workplace, school or college, or even your place of leisure and recreation, in that place, God’s goodness flows from you.

Before we go back into the song again, I’d love us to pray about that if that’s ok. If you’re thinking “I just need to know God’s goodness afresh, I don’t know where He’s gone, it’s like He was with me, but I just feel I’ve walked away – God's running after you! If that’s you, lift up your hands. But also lift your hands if you’ve already got a sense of God’s presence but I want Him to go with me, to flood out of me wherever I go this week. Whichever of those two camps you’re in lift up your hands to the Lord and I’d love to pray for you!

Father, thank you that you run after us, with your goodness. Literally, your goodness is running after us, because you know that we need you. You know that we need your presence, we need your goodness, your nearness, your closeness, however we describe it, Lord, we need you! Ultimately, we need you. If we’ve gone off on our own path and just done our own thing, your goodness, your presence, your very nearness and closeness runs after us and Father for any this morning that are feeling like that, I want to pray God will your goodness, run after them so close and may they feel afresh this morning your Holy Spirit, fall afresh this morning. Where you feel dry or weary, where you feel empty, this morning God’s goodness is running after you, so Holy Spirit, come afresh, come afresh, right now across this room. Flow afresh through my brothers and sisters who are dry and weary, who are worn out. Lord, let your goodness run and fill them afresh right now. Lord in order that, in order that wherever we place our feet his week, wherever we go, whatever conversations we have, whatever situations we’re in, whatever place we inhabit, that your goodness and your presence would flow out of us.

Let us be a church full of your portable temples of the Holy Spirit, taking your goodness, your presence, your nearness, your closeness into every situation and conversation. Come Lord, come Holy Spirit, come fill them right now.
