So what did people share?
2 Corinthians 5:17
Bo - “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come, the old is gone, the new is here”
This verse is important to me because I think it just speaks the truth. If you're saved by Jesus, you're a completely new person. You don't do the things same things that you would have done before you were saved.
2 Corinthians 5:7
Cat - “For we walk by faith, not by sight, and we live by believing and not seeing. It's what we trust in, but don't yet see, that keeps us going.” This is important to me because of this little man down here, who we prayed and waited eight years for! God sustained us. Last year he was in the NICU and extremely poorly and we just we praise God for being with us in every moment of waiting for him.
Habakkuk 3:17-19 & Joel 2:21-29
David - I've got 2 passages. I'm sorry! The passages are Habakkuk 3:17-19, and then Joel 2:21-29. I won’t read all of the verses, but the first one in Habakkuk says, “though the fig tree should not blossom nor fruit be on the vines" (I summarise), "yet I'll rejoice in the Lord. I'll take joy in God, my salvation. He is my strength!” Then the Joel passage, talks about: “fear not you beasts of the land of the field for the pastures of the wilderness are green, the tree bears its fruit, the fig tree and the vine give their full yield" and it ends saying “you shall know that I am in the midst of Israel, I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh, your sons and daughters will prophecy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions," finally it says "and even on my male and female servants in those days, I'll pour out my spirit" and I felt God give me the first passage during university and then almost as a response to that, the Joel 2 leapt out as like the fulfilment of those promises. Even when things look bleak, to trust God and that actually He promises that He will be faithful and that He'll be with us, and that the trees will bear fruit, the vine will have its full yield, there will be abundant rain. So yeah, just standing on those promises at the moment.
John 3:16
Derek - It’s a very familiar verse. It's John 3:16 “for God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, so whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life”. For me, that is just so profound, that I wouldn't be where I am if it wasn't for what Jesus done for us and how God loved His creation and all the promises in Scripture just flow through that, that the Kingdom of heaven opens up and you don't only have eternal life, but you live in that Kingdom of heaven life, right now through to eternity.
Psalm 139:9-10
Chris - It’s Psalm 139 which I could read all of it, but I won't and so I have chosen a couple of verses. Verses 9-10 "If I rise on the wings of dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me and your right hand will hold me fast”. There are so many scriptures I could choose, but we were singing Firm Foundation earlier and it's one of my favourite songs which speaks of my favourite scripture just because God knows everything and he's holding me.
Psalm 121:1-2 & 8
Sandeep - I think on the Psalm theme, Chris, I'm going to go for Psalm 121, my favourite verses from that, Psalm 121:1-2 & 8. “I lift my eyes to the mountains, where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Make of Heaven and Earth and then it says “the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forever more”. I love that Psalm because throughout my life, you know, whether it's, you know, as a kid at school or going for exams or, you know, getting ready to be married or new job or whatever. Just throughout that time I can just rely on a God that watches over us time and time again in the day and the night throughout your whole life, it reminds us that God is with you, watching over you, looking after you. I just love that, and cling on to that verse when I'm going through difficult times or good times.
2 Corinthains 4:7
“But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.” It's just it for me a reminder that I'm not dependent upon my own strength. You know, to do what the Lord wants to do, it's allowing him to work through us and we are not dependent on ourselves.
Philippians 4:6
Maria - “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, present your request to the Lord.” I used to have a lot of anxiety before knowing Jesus, but for the last six years I've been anxiety free.
Romans 8:31-32
Rai - OK, well may be you might call it cheating, but it isn't. It's got two questions in it and it leads on to the answer. So it's 2 verses, but really they’re one I think. So it's from Romans and after James’ preach last week from Romans 8:31-32. What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? And it follows on “He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things?” For me that is just so comforting to know that this is what God has done for me and it's everlasting and eternal and it's through his son, not through what I've done or anything that of my own merit, but through Jesus Christ. I can rely on that because he's proved it by the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ that we, in response to that, who can be against this? Nobody can because Gods is with us.
Philippians 4:13
Anne - “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me”, and there has been many situations I've been in over the years when I've just looked at what's going on and thought, I just can't do this, I just can't do this. And this passaged takes me back to the fact that I don't need to do it in my own strength. I can do it in God's strength and in some ways to the point of feeling, it's God's responsibility. I can give it to God and God will enable me to do it.
