Greetings David,
I’m Peter Wray and I’ve been with TransformAsia for 1 1/2 years as a Development Coordinator. Most of what I’ve done so far has been to set up speaking engagements for Setan and connect TransformAsia with the Bible, Food, and Water Ministries of my previous employer, Heaven’s Family. I directed several Ministries at Heaven’s Family over a 7 year period, the last 4 as Director of the Strategic Bibles Ministry and Books for Discipleship Ministry. 30 years prior, I spent primarily in financial sales.
Setan and Randa have definitely been called of the Lord to their current Ministry and it is a privilege to work with them. Their commitment to Cambodia and the Ministry is understated. I spent a week with Setan in Pittsburgh, PA this past July. Outside of accompanying him to speaking engagements and individual meetings with other ministry directors, he and I had time to discuss TransformAsia’s direction.
Here is what I’ve gleaned. To understand evangelism and church planting in Cambodia, you must consider the Buddhist culture and along with other societal factors. Many older Cambodians have Buddhism ingrained in them as a religion and as a culture. Even older Christian pastors can sometimes be lazy with little initiative due to a remnant Buddhist attitude that “you can never do better in this life, it’s what you deserve from your past life.” Some of them haven’t realized the “new creation” within them. Setan currently is trying to develop future leaders from the younger generation. He is teaching them the importance of community and how to use their church buildings for social events like weddings, funerals, banquets and sports clinics; a Christian counterpart to Buddhist temples. The youth are willing to try new things and not just accept the hopeless Buddhist mentality.
TransformAsia leaders must nurture their sheep and preach the gospel in spite of all the deterrents of society. Over a thousand conversions take place at the hands of TransformAsia Churches every year. The Christians there need our prayerful and financial help.
For His Glory,
Peter Wray
