Derby Churches Night Shelter and Sleep Out.

Derby City Mission with a number of volunteers help facilitate a night shelter (on behalf of Derby Churches), for the homeless in Derby, keeping them fed and warm in the coldest months of the year. From December to March the shelter holds up to 35 people, providing them with a hot meal and a place to bed down for the night instead of being out on the streets. Derby City Mission works in partnership with 7 churches (one per night), in or near the city centre to help provide a welcoming, warm venue. The shelter is kitted out with brand new sleeping bags and blankets and volunteers are available throughout the night to offer support and prayer. At 8am the next morning they head back out onto the cold streets fuelled with a healthy breakfast including cereals and fresh fruits and support to address their needs.

Last Sunday (14th of October) we collected lots of bits and pieces to go to the night shelter to help this brilliant cause! We collected cereals, socks, tea bags, fleeces and many more resources that will go to help support the night shelter guests! Thank you to everyone who brought in something we really appreciate being able to give to something that will bless those in need!

“Is it not to share your food with the hungry
and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter-
when you see the naked, to clothe them,
and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?”
- Isaiah 58:7

As amazing as it is to give to such a good cause, there is always more that we can do to bless those who need it most, so to find out more about how to give visit Derby City Mission’s website. (link) To give you some perspective, the night shelter needs £103,000 per year that it runs, and just £2 can provide a meal for someone! So, every little contribution helps bless an individual who really needs it.

Some of the youth at Jubilee are taking part in a sleep out that you can sign up for here. (link) This will give them the opportunity to experience the reality of homelessness as they camp out in a car park overnight.  This will help raise money for the night shelter as well as raise the awareness of our young people, to understand more about what it feels like to be homeless.

Thank you to all who have supported Derby City Mission’s Night Shelter either by helping our young people raise money, giving financially or bringing in donations for the shelter! We really love being able to support something so worthwhile!
