Derby came second in a recently released list of 'Best locations to earn a living.' appearing just behind Crawley and ahead of Southampton.
Credit checking company TotallyMoney who describe Derby as the 'centre of advanced transport manufacturing', compiled the list by calculating the cost of living, salaries, average monthly mortgage repayments, job growth and business closures.
Close neighbours Nottingham came 46th and Leicester 52nd whilst the city of London, with its high cost of living, was 38th.
Joe Gardiner, TotallyMoney head of brand and content said "While many are drawn to bigger cities, such as London and Birmingham, in the hope of earning a decent living, our research shows they may not be the best overall option because of the higher-than-average living costs."
