Foundations for Farming in India http://www.jubilee.org.uk/blog/#116 Many of you will have heard of Foundations for Farming a project started by Brian Oldreive who is based in Zimbabwe. Please see below an excerpt from their latest enews. Foundations for Farming in India In recent years, Foundations for Farming has exploded into many different nations. At our Champions Conference in March 2011 we had visitors from many nations, and one such visitor was Mark Deveraj from India who heard of Foundations for Farming through the Newfrontiers family of churches of which he is a part in India. Mark's Foundations for Farming StationWhen Mark returned from the Champions Conference just over a year ago, he immediately put into practice what he had learnt. Mark was raised on a mission station in Pagadupattu, Karumandurai, Salem District, which has a school and hospital on site, and he and his brother now run the school on the station with Mark overseeing the agriculture at the site. Their vision is to share and replicate this in the communities around. The station itself is about 2 hectares in size and has been farmed, using Foundations for Farming priniciples, to a really high standard. Brian Oldreive Visits IndiaBrian Oldreive, founder of Foundations for Farming, spent a few weeks in April traveling around India. He visited Mark during this time and was really impressed with the work that Mark had done. "Marks demonstration plots were the neatest thing I saw in the whole country! The plots in the village are a shining light to the people around." While Brian was visiting, some Newfrontiers leaders from churches around came to visit and see what Mark was doing and they now want to replicate what he is doing elsewhere...<read more> ---- What is Foundations for Farming? Foundations for Farming started many years ago when the farm which Brian Oldreive was managing in the north of Zimbabwe was nearing bankruptcy. Burning and deep soil inversion were common practice on the farm causing terrible sheet erosion to occur resulting in loss of seed and water. Increasing amounts of money were being spent on the machinery required for ploughing and double rollings of the lands, and yet the yields were declining. Being a man of faith, Brian asked God to reveal a way for him to get out of the dire situation he found himself in. God began to reveal to him that in natural creation there is no deep soil inversion and that a thick "blanket" of fallen leaves and grass covers the surface of the soil. This led him to research how he could apply these ways of nature to his farming. He began to experiment with Zero-Tillage using a simple hoe on 2 Ha at the highest standards possible. The results were outstanding and so he had the faith to increase the hectarage under Zero-Tillage. Within six years the whole farm of 1,000 Ha was under minimum tillage and in subsequent years, due to the yearly profits from then on, other farms were bought and he oversaw the farming of 3,500 Ha. The success of the principles we advocate are undeniable in his lifes testimony. The main priniciples are based upon the following: Profitability is possible if you faithfully apply these management principles of doing everything: 1. On Time. Plan ahead. Prepare well. Start early. Never be late! 2. At a High Standard. Do every operation and detail as well as you can with no shortcuts. Be honest and honourable in all you do. 3. Without Wasting. Dont waste time, soil, water, sunlight, seed, nutrients, labour, energy, opportunity etc. 4. With Joy. If you do these first three things faithfully without self pity, complaining, blaming others, making excuses, but with thankfulness, there will be no need for fear and hopelessness and you will have hope and joy which gives you strength. If Foundations for Farming is applied faithfully, Africa can feed itself. The challenges keep coming! I will start by saying thank you so much for your continued support. It makes such a difference to our residents and the communities we work with and is all the more important as the austerity measures begin to bite. The financial challenge The financial provision for the Supporting People programme in Derby has been cut by 2/3rds, from £9m to £3m. This is despite an acknowledgement that every £1 spent on the programme saves £3 across all services. For Faith Hope and Enterprise, this measure and similar changes in Derbyshire County Council, represents a sizeable decrease in income. Changes to Housing Benefit system are also taking effect. We have seen a significant reduction in payments for new residents this year, which we are challenging. The system is very slow however and is affecting the level of support we are able to provide. Furthermore, other benefits are also being affected. Currently, 1/3rd of our residents are not receiving benefits such as Job Seekers Allowance or Employment Support Allowance. The food parcels you continue to give have become a life-line for them. This is against the backdrop of The Trussell Trust giving out twice as many food parcels this year (120,000) as last, across 200 centres in the UK and demonstrates the widespread nature of the challenges people face. The value of support This week saw two residents move into a specifically sourced two-bedroom property in Derby. When they first came to us, these residents were rough sleeping and eating from skips outside restaurants. In the last two and a half years they have overcome the challenges of homelessness, alcoholism and drug addiction. They have successfully completed a period of probation and re-established contact with families, including a young child. Both of them are now working. Without support, such life changes are not possible. Your help has made all the difference. From all of our residents - thank you. How to help It has been wonderful in the last few weeks to have people with a little time available to volunteer with different aspects of support. If you can recommend someone in this situation, or would like to help yourself, please contact me. In the meantime please encourage your groups and friends with donating food (£1 or 1 item per week), clothes and household goods. I promise you, every gift is valued. Jubilee Church Derby Tue, 15 May 2012 14:00:00 Awake, Arise! - Saturday 30th June - 10am http://www.jubilee.org.uk/blog/#114 Awake, Arise! In 1992 the worlds biggest ever political gathering - the Rio Earth Summit - marked one of the first times that world leaders met to discuss the environment. Twenty years later, they are meeting again for Rio+20 to see how well they have done - and how much more they need to do. We share a world where consumption by the wealthiest directly affects the life and death of the poorest people. Environmental issues, including climate change, are devastating lives and Gods good creation. Our faith reminds us that God created the world, but we have often failed to care for it as we should. The problems often seem insurmountable, as greed and injustice appear to reign. However, our faith also gives us hope that change is possible. Come along to a Whose Earth? event to examine Christian responses to environmental issues, including: • the Bible basis • the science behind the issues • how we can all play a part in responding, including calling on decision-makers to act to eradicate poverty in a way that protects the environment. In November 2010 I was contacted by Edward Buria with a plea for help. Drought had once again hit Kenya and the Horn of Africa. In Kenya alone 5 million people were threatened with starvation. Could Newfrontiers churches raise some funds for food and water?Following an appeal, £260,000 has so far been raised to help alleviate the problem. Recent visit Recently I travelled with John Buria, Edward';s brother, and his relief team into Turkana and Samburu to see what the situation is currently like and to learn about the intervention the Newfrontiers churches have brought over the last 15 months. After a long hot journey (temperatures around 40 degrees) we reached a remote location west of Lake Turkana, 17 hours by road from the Newfrontiers base in Meru - but we flew! This was my first visit. Following a television broadcast in August Edward (who oversees the Newfrontiers churches in Kenya) had received a request from Turkana to ';come over and help';. He has been praying for Turkana for many years and saw this as the opening he had been waiting for. We found a desperately needy people living on the edge of starvation. They relied on hand-outs from the team. Rains had come recently so water was no longer a problem, but crops had not yet grown; indeed some of the seed had been washed out of the ground when the rain was too heavy. We also visited a camp for Internally Displaced People. They have lived there, dependent on hand-outs, since the post election riots of 2007/8. Next we travelled to Samburu, an area I have visited many times. I was delighted to see a sand dam had been built. This traps the water as it rushes down the river for perhaps one week during the torrential rains, when they do come. Usually this precious water is lost into the sand. Now it is stored in a bed of sand (which reduces evaporation and filters the water) and will provide a source of water during the prolonged dry seasons. Please click here to view the video. This article was originally written by Nigel Ring on his blog: "Feeding 5,000 is no picnic". You can read more from Nigel at: www.nigelring.org About Nigel Ring Nigel Ring has been in full time ministry for nearly 30 years. During that time he has served Terry Virgo as his Administrator, which has included a huge range of administrative responsibilities in the Newfrontiers family of churches. He has also been heavily involved in ministry with the poor, through a variety of different ministries both in the United Kingdom and across the globe in various 'developing nations'. Remember, all we are asking is that every time you do your weekly shop, you spend £1 or buy 1 item that we can distribute to those with so little. We would particularly appreciate items that can contribute to main course meals at this point in time. LoveDerby this Christmas Finally, we would love to be able to bless all our residents this Christmas. This can be such a lonely time of year for them and the knowledge that the church loves and cares for them and has chosen to give them gifts would mean so much. I will let you know details of our proposal soon. In the meantime, if you would like to be involved in this additional giving, please let me know. On behalf of all our residents, thank you so much for your love and generosity. Jubilee Church Derby Thu, 20 Oct 2011 09:00:00 Thank you...but the Crisis Still with Us - Kenya Update http://www.jubilee.org.uk/blog/#76 Over 35 Million Kenya Shillings (£250,000) have been used for relief supplies to over 10,000 people from January - September 2011 and for starting several projects to help long term sustainability in Samburu. One Pan Dam has been completed that will be able to harvest over 100,000 cubic metres of rain water and supply water to over 18,000 people and their livestock. Three Sand Dams are being built to provide water to an extra 9,000 persons with their livestock. Further, over 3000 people have been treated and supplied with medicines by our Mobile Clinic Teams. About 400 family Units in the worst hit parts of this famine in Turkana have also received relief supplies (Maize, Beans, Unimix, Sugar, Water) once every month through nine Newfrontiers churches in that region. Our interventions have also extended discreetly into Somalia. Gratitude… Praying recently, and looking back to all the achievements made since we started these operations, I find my heart so much thrilled we have saved several thousands from imminent deaths. By starting several long time projects hope has been re-born among the targeted people. The feeling is just awesome when I see what meagre but combined resources can achieve when well stewarded. On behalf of all the beneficiaries, my teams and myself, a heartfelt ';thank you'; to all our friends and partners (both local and from the international community) who have made it possible for us to sustain and maintain the relief programs through much love and generosity expressed. We are very grateful to several companies, our churches and individuals in Kenya who have given us food and/or monies to assist with the ongoing. I have also been deeply touched by the generosity of churches from the USA, UK, other nations in Europe, India, Dubai and Africa. …and sadnessThe crisis still remains and, indeed, deepens. In Turkana (north west Kenya, bordering Uganda, South Sudan and Ethiopia) our teams are reporting that things are pathetic and require urgent response. I have just received very sad news that a father of seven in one of the areas we are planting a church lost his 15 year old son, William, to starvation on September 28th. The next 6 monthsNo harvest can be expected before next March. That assumes the rains come and seed is planted in October. Meanwhile, many thousands will continue to rely on humanitarian aid. We urgently need further funds to maintain the relief work:• Food• Water• Seeds for planting in the next few weeks• Completion of the water related projects We also plan to give 60 camels, 120 cows and around 600 goats as a way of giving back the livelihood to those from the pastoralist communities. I sincerely ask you to stand with us through these next very difficult and challenging months. May God bless you. Thank you so much for your continued trust in us and our faithful stewardship. We are committed to supporting churches and other community groups with a vision to help people overcome their money problems and make a fresh start on a stable financial footing free from the blight of indebtedness. History of CMA Community Money Advice became a charity in 2003 to help churches and other local organisations to set up money advice centres. But the history really begins in 1997, with the setting up of the Community Debt Advice Centre in Burgess Hill. At the time, there were no other christian debt advice organisations in the country, and volunteers had to learn how to set up and run a centre on their own. Once the Burgess Hill centre was up and running, enquiries starting coming in from all over the country from groups wanting advice on starting their own centres. In 2000 as part of a Newfrontiers initiative called Act 2000, a series of booklets were commissioned on social action projects, including a booklet called 'Setting Up a Debt Advice Centre'. Following the publication of that booklet it became clear that there was a need for a separate organisation to handle the growing demand for help in setting up centres and training volunteers. Community Money Advice gained charitable status in 2003. Operating from Shropshire, CMA has grown from having just two affiliate centres in 2003, to nearly 100 in 2011. Looking to the future, CMA is currently implementing an ambitious three year plan to support the continuing growth in demand for debt advice services across the UK. As a result of the evening 19 people have decided that they would like to attend the course to find out more. All in all it was a great success and we are really looking forward to see how the course will develop over the coming weeks. Is there more to life than this? Why and How do I pray? Does God heal today? The Alpha course looks at these and other questions, providing a practical introduction to the Christian faith. Over 10 weeks, the Alpha Course helps guests explore the meaning of life, revealing that Christianity can be every bit as relevant to life today as it was 2000 years ago. There is still time to book in! For more information please visit: www.jubilee.org.uk/alpha Jubilee Church Derby Mon, 26 Sep 2011 08:00:00 Bible Society Event http://www.jubilee.org.uk/blog/#65 Wednesday 5th October - 10am - 4pm Near St. Peters & Waterstones in Derby This year marks the 400th anniversary of the King James Bible - and, to celebrate the occasion, the Bible Society of England & Wales and Scottish Bible Society want to give people the chance to make their mark in history and be part of the world's first digitally handwritten edition of the Bible. This is what they say about the project: The aim of the project is to engage people that have never read the Bible before - to do this effectively we need an appropriate public facing venue, maybe a large event or a location that will have high visibility for large numbers of the general public. This is why we'll be taking our ScribePods to public venues around the country (festivals, shows, shopping centres, beaches etc), where anyone can turn up and hand write two verses of the Bible, personalised with a comment, doodle or signature. The verses will be displayed to each writer on our specially-built iPad writing stations, and then written out with a digital pen and paper - creating a searchable online archive of everyone's contribution. Submissions have already been coming in, and you can see these here. As well as being a fantastic cultural event, with a great community spirit, we anticipate The People's Bible road show generating a substantial amount of press interest and coverage. We'll also be running our own promotion around the events, with local connections, celebrity endorsements etc. Prince Charles has written the first two verses (which you can see here), and the whole tour will wrap up with an event in Westminster Abbey, where we'll be presenting a bound copy of some of the handwritten verses. Other celebrity contributions can be viewed here. We've already been to: Metrocentre, Newcastle Tynwald Fair, Isle of Mann Mega Mela, Middlesborough Royal Norfolk Agricultural Show Other locations we're going to with the road show include: Greenbelt festival, Cheltenham The Swan Centre, Eastleigh The Arndale Shopping Centre, Eastbourne St John';s Shopping Centre, Liverpool Jubilee Church Derby Sat, 24 Sep 2011 08:00:00 LoveDerby - An Update http://www.jubilee.org.uk/blog/#60 Prisons This week, the prison population hit a record high - 86,842. Prison resources and staff are stretched, including probation and re-settlement officers who are struggling to cope with prisoners being moved around the country to manage the record figures. Take Richard, for example. Richard One day recently I spoke to a re-settlement officer from a prison hundreds of miles from Derby. Richard (not his real name) who has lived in Derby all his life was being released the following week and I had no opportunity to interview him except by phone the day before his release. He had became homeless and had been arrested for breaking into a building in order to have a safe place to sleep (the streets are dangerous places at night). It was only after this interview that Richard knew he would not be back on the streets the following night. When I collected him, Richard had a small bag and the clothes he stood up in. He had nothing else in the world. I took him to his accommodation where some of the furniture in the room, including the television and bedding, were gifts from Jubilee. There was also a food parcel, crockery, cutlery, tin opener, towels and toiletries collected together as part of LoveDerby. Richard was so appreciative of the kindness of the church. LoveDerby LoveDerby is about showing the people of Derby in practical ways that God loves them. That takes many forms, like the gifts to Richard, and it is a privilege to be part of it. There is no likelihood of rain before October/November. Assuming there is then sufficient rain for planting seed food will not be available before March. This heartfelt cry comes from Edward Buria. My Dear Friends, I am sure you are receipt of my latest report on the ongoing Drought/Famine Crisis being experienced in Kenya and number of Countries in Horn of Africa (see Newfrontiers website). Further to that report, I have had more serious encounters with so many people who are battling the effects of the drought/famine. This is why I have decided to share with you the very latest reports on the same. When I saw this child I concluded that the situation can not get any worse! A child like this represents millions of the starving children and adults alike in the drought/famine affected areas in Kenya, and Nations of the Horn of Africa. One mother';s cry Yesterday while visiting one of our relief distribution centres, a very desperate mother crying and narrating to me what she and her family have gone through told me something that will remain with me for a very long time to come. She told me in a low low tone “…Pastor it can not be any other tough, it is very very tough!” I immediately and very spontaneously responded back to her “..Mama,that is why we have TAF(Together Against Famine Kenya) in place”. I told her and the many people in this centre, that I would do anything I am able to do to make sure that no one within the areas of our targets dies of starvation. I also promised that I will speak on their behalf to the world and let the World know what they are facing and going through. Red Cross, World Food Programme and other humanitarian organisations are doing whatever they can, but the problem is becoming more serious and larger by each passing day. This crisis is more serious than what is known and captured by the Media. We even know of areas and people who have not been identified by the organisations that are assisting the affected, and who are in dire need of relief supplies. My plea is a simple one. Let us do what we can do NOW before it is too late! God loves such Kids and the many people who are starving in Kenya and Nations of the Horn of Africa! You can read the lyrics here & listen to the song here. Scripture - 1 Corinthians 13:1-3 Jubilee Church Derby Wed, 17 Aug 2011 09:15:00 Riots in Our Nation http://www.jubilee.org.uk/blog/#46 This week our nation has seen rioting and looting on a scale it has rarely witnessed. Violence and vandalism swept first across the capital and then to other cities around the country. Such events rightly drive us to our knees. It is a wonderful testimony to the world that the top-trending topic on Twitter for most of Tuesday was the hashtag #prayforlondon. Can I encourage you to pray not only for peace to return to our streets, but for the police, fire brigade, and for those in authority, for parents, community leaders, and politicians. Pray for those who have lost businesses, homes and livelihoods, and for those who have lost family members and friends to the violence. Pray too for those whose sons, daughters, neighbours and friends have been arrested, or who have caused criminal damage. Lives and communities have been ripped apart, and healing can only come from God. Meanwhile, as the media looked on in shock and the police worked flat out to protect property and bring the situation under control, something more positive was beginning to happen. By Tuesday morning hundreds of individuals and community groups were flooding to the streets to start the clean-up. This provides a massive opportunity for the church too to be involved and to be a model community. In our towns and cities, the church has a unique role in providing hope and a model of community life. Although at the time of writing the pop-up website riotcleanup.co.uk is showing that all areas have been cleared, community centres, charities and local groups are sending out appeals for clothing, household goods, blankets and emergency food supplies to give to those who have lost everything. Many Newfrontiers churches run or are associated with Foodbanks which may be in need of extra supplies over the coming weeks, and if the violence continues there will be renewed needs for teams to take to the streets with brooms and bin-bags to play our part in bringing shalom to our neighbourhoods. We have an excellent opportunity - if not an imperative - to be salt and light in our towns and cities at this difficult time. Can I urge you to encourage your congregations this Sunday with the famous words from Matthew';s Gospel “let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” Written by David Stroud (Abridged) Image from: http://www.muresnews.ro/ (12/08/2011) Jubilee Church Derby Fri, 12 Aug 2011 09:04:00 Review of the Main Sessions at Together on a Mission 2011 - Part 1 http://www.jubilee.org.uk/blog/#44 We had the privilege of being able to attend the final International TOAM in Brighton this summer. We were full of anticipation about what God would say to us and how this time of transition would come through in the teaching that was brought. I have to say that we both felt that it was an excellent time, easily the best TOAM conference we have been to. The conference started with a talk from Scott Marques, who brings leadership oversight to much of the work that Newfrontiers is doing in Zimbabwe, Malawi and Mozambique. He called us to live courageous lives of faith, emulating the people of faith that have gone before us. He thundered this to us from Hebrews 11! It was a fitting start to the week and set the tone and theme for the conference. Terry Virgo followed Scott with the first of three talks that he gave throughout the week. He spoke from Hebrews 12 (the leadership are not asked to speak from specific passages or about specific themes prior to the conference, they are simply asked to bring what God has laid on their heart). We are being called into a faith dimension as we run the race, the contest, the marathon ahead. Terry called us to run the race to the end, to be diligent. He called us to believe God, that this may well look different for everyone of us, but that we must still believe God in our circumstances and in the things that he has given us to do. “Run your race, run with perseverance, patience (not passivity). Leaning forward, leaning with expectation, imitate those who through faith and patience, received the promise of God”. Next up was Steven Van Rhyn who spoke about having “Courage for a New Era”. He reminded us that we were approaching a “red letter day”, where the centre of gravity within our movement moves from the UK to multiple centers across the world. How we respond to this is vitally important. New Leaders, New Challenges, New Sacrifices, New Issues, New Identities, NEW ERA! The next speaker in the main sessions was David Stroud. He spoke about how we would move forward as Newfrontiers UK but it was still I feel very relevant to all. He spoke about how we would continue to work together but recognise autonomous apostolic spheres. We were challenged to leadership which was: courageous “everything” leadership, missional leadership, affirming leadership, embracing leadership, and finally to develop natural & supernatural leadership. In the next session Terry Virgo continued in Hebrews 12 and enthused us to keep our eyes fixed on Jesus as the answer to every question. We were reminded that Jesus inspired robust faith - robust enough to cause an ordinary man to walk on water! To remember that we have been given a gospel which addresses us as Sons of God! He reminded us that pressure, discipline and trials prove us as Sons. He reminded us that suffering in many different forms should be expected as followers of Christ, we do not become immune to this simply by becoming Christians, in fact we should grow to expect trials of many kinds. We were also encouraged that the way we deal with suffering is key and given pointers on how to deal with these situations. More to follow... Jubilee Church Derby Fri, 05 Aug 2011 16:14:00 Review of the Main Sessions at Together on a Mission 2011 - Part 2 http://www.jubilee.org.uk/blog/#45 ...continues from part 1... In the following session PJ Smyth (based in Johannesburg, SA) spoke on the subject of Suffering, Sickness & Healing. This is something that God has put on his heart since his battle with cancer over the last year. This is an excellent talk and I cannot do it justice in this short summary. In his first section he spoke about the sources of sickness and then reflected on the source of healing. I can wholeheartedly recommend this to those who have or are suffering with sickness, longterm or short term. I would also recommend listening to PJ & Ashleigh talking about their experiences on the training track they were part of (Training Track 11 Part 1). Joel Virgo was the next speaker in the main leadership section. He spoke about Gideon from Judges 6:36-7:8 reminding us that God was merciful to Gideon, through his doubts and allowed Gideon to test him. God';s patience with Gideon here is striking and gracious, he gives time. He spoke about the sifting of the army before going into battle showing that God wanted to (A) bring strength and (B) call forth weakness. In his last afternoon session Terry sat on a chair and “chatted” to us who were gathered, he wanted it to be as intimate as possible (with a couple of thousand in the room). His desire was to highlight a number of things that God has spoken to him about and that are close to his heart. That everything is: God';s initiative, God';s enabling, God';s commissioning, Being a Servant, having Faith, through Prayer, through Gathering a Team. He ended his talk with a video which was b-roll from the many videos which Nigel Ring has produced, it was a real honouring time for all the hard work, effort, faith, expectation and friendship that he had given to Terry. This was a very special moment! David Holden had the honour of closing TOAM 2011. He wanted to remind us to keep looking forward, he also want to remind us that this wasn';t just the end of a conference, but also the end of the way that we have worked thus far. That things will be different, will look different and work differently. We have an expectation that people outside looking in will say “wow, you guys have changed”. He reminded us that there are No Well Worn Paths ahead, we will obviously be Newfrontiers, we carry our heritage, our DNA, our experiences but he also suggested that we had treasures that must be kept alive. We must be Like Minded, have the Same Love, Being One in Spirit, Being One in Purpose, Having the Attitude of Christ. Finally we were urged to die to small mindedness, to realise that it is biblical for the small to become large - increase is how God does it. And the next thing is... I would wholeheartedly recommend downloading the talks for yourself, they are all available on the Newfrontiers website. I haven';t even mentioned any of the morning training track sessions which are full of varied teaching and encouragements. I can personally recommend listening to Training Track 11 which was very thought provoking and encouraging. Don';t miss out! Jubilee Church Derby Fri, 05 Aug 2011 16:30:00 Forward Together - NO WELL-WORN PATHS http://www.jubilee.org.uk/blog/#43 The Brighton-based Together on a Mission conference is in it's final year and this edition of the magazine marks a major landmark in our journey together. So what';s next? Terry Virgo shares something of the story of Newfrontiers from it's out-set. He also introduces to a wider audience, the group of men who will carry forward the various apostolic spheres that have been formed over the years. Some of these people will be more familiar to us than others and all have been given space to share something of their heart and vision for the future. I would recommend taking time to read through this magazine, it will really give you a sense of where Newfrontiers have been and where we are heading together. You will catch a glimpse of the wider work we are involved with. It would also be good if you read the sections written by Jeremy Simpkins (oversees the North Region) and David Stroud (who oversees the UK Region). The July-September Edition was made available last month and you can pick up a copy from the Welcome Table on Sunday Mornings. Jubilee Church Derby Fri, 15 Jul 2011 15:30:00 Food parcels project - an update http://www.jubilee.org.uk/blog/#42 The Faith Hope and Enterprise Company Ltd provides supported housing for some of the most marginalised members of society. Their exclusion may be due to general homelessness issues, drug or alcohol misuse, former offending behaviour or mental health concerns. Faith Hope and Enterprise develop mentoring relationships with residents to help them identify and achieve their goals in life. The approach places a high value on these relationships which sometimes last for many years. A number of people have come to know Jesus as their Saviour through their contact with the company. Sometimes residents struggle financially. When they first take their accommodation they may not be in receipt of any benefits and this can take several weeks to resolve. People also lose benefits through changes in their circumstances, previous debts, crisis loans or former offending behaviour. Jubilee Church and Faith Hope and Enterprise are partnering together to provide food parcels to such people in their time of need. Please consider spending £1 or buying one item of non-perishable food or household essentials every time you do a regular shop. If you give these items to your LifeGroup co-ordinator it will distributed to those in need. We are also working together to help make a house a home. If you have any household items in good condition which your are replacing, please consider passing them on to your co-ordinator. We have already received a number of paintings, towels, bedding and a television and free view box. These items help people to settle into their accommodation, feel safe, valued and secure. For more information please speak to Kevin and Melanie Gill or your LifeGroup co-ordinator. This is a scripture that has been on my mind now for the last couple of weeks. A good friend of mine was talking about their church planting experiences and said that if they had not learnt the lesson that God is in the business of building church and that it is not mans job, then they wouldn't be pastoring a successful church right now! Tuesday night the church gathered to pray, it was a really encouraging evening, and God spoke some practical things. But that scripture was mentioned again . . . I will build my church. . . So many times we as Christians can get so stuck on doing church, so involved in the routine, that we thing it is our job to build the church. Yes we have a responsibility to show people the love of Jesus, but ultimately the building of the church is down to God! I don't know about you, but this gives me great relief! The church is going to grow because God has promised He will grow it! I know what some of you might be thinking right now and its a fair thought - if we are not meant to be building the church, then how will we grow? God has given us all a job to do - each one of us fulfills and integral part in the church family, and we need to be completely open to all that God has for us and all that He wants us to do. Some of the challenges from the prayer meeting were about asking ourselves - Am I ready to be used by God? Am I willing to be in tune with the Holy Spirit? Am I willing to step out of my comfort box on a Sunday morning and talk to visitors? And not only talk to them, but ask God for a word of knowledge for them? Pray for them? If we are faithful in the small things - God will entrust to us much!As we look after those people who God has given us with excellence and with love, God will add to us and He WILL build His church here in Derby! God has got some amazing adventures for us here at Jubilee, so be excited and be willing to embrace all God has for you! Jubilee Church Derby Mon, 17 Jan 2011 20:59:00 Joining the church http://www.jubilee.org.uk/blog/#13 Right from the outset, Jubilee Church started with a vision to make an impact in the City of Derby - to see lives changed, communities impacted and the Kingdom of God extended, in Derby and beyond. Jubilee Church is a family on a mission together. We're family, but we're also going somewhere! Becoming a member of Jubilee is about becoming part of a vibrant community, and committing yourself to playing your unique part in this vision. We can do so much more together than we can apart, so why not consider joining? We have a short membership course that goes through our beliefs and vision & values. We ask everyone who is considering membership to complete this. At the end of the course, you can decide whether Jubilee is really for you. When you become a Christian, you become part of the worldwide Church. However, the Bible also encourages Christians to become participating members of a specific local community. In the New Testament, new believers were always saved and added to a local church - there was no sense of any Christian just "going it alone". So don't miss out - commit to becoming a member of Jubilee Church and press in to all God has in store for you. See the events page for details of the next membership evenings. Our year has started on a rather challenging note as we find ourselves battling a severe draught. Our friends in Samburu are badly hit. May we have much prayer from our churches. Thank you and God bless you. Edward. Let us stand with our friends in Kenya and pray for them at this difficult time. Jubilee Church Derby Mon, 20 Dec 2010 12:48:00 Christmas Special Offering http://www.jubilee.org.uk/blog/#7 This year, we are pleased to support Derby City Mission's Christmas appeal which is providing Christmas presents for children in Derby who would otherwise not receive any. They also give each child a present from local churches, so to help with this we will have a special offering on Sunday 19th December. Please can we encourage you to come prepared to give into this - thanks! Jubilee Church Derby Fri, 10 Dec 2010 12:41:00 Responding to God http://www.jubilee.org.uk/blog/#6 I guess for most of us, there are defining moments when God breaks in, often in unexpected and surprising ways. That would certainly be true for many at Jubilee yesterday morning as Julian Adams brought some pretty significant and life shaping words to people. For those individuals, they need to respond with faith and pray into these. In fact, that is true for all of us as most of these words are for working out within the context of the local church, and we all have a part to play there. We'll be arranging for a recording of the words to be made available for people and John & I will be meeting people and helping them to process what God is saying. Some of the prophetic words will also have a significant effect upon the church and the way we build. We will be praying into these and asking God to show us more. God is good, He is in control and He is building His church. Hallelujah! Jubilee Church Derby Mon, 29 Nov 2010 16:00:00 Julian Adams visiting Jubilee http://www.jubilee.org.uk/blog/#3 I, for one, am really looking forward to Julian Adams visiting Jubilee on Sunday 28th November. Any time the church gathers we should be looking forward to meeting with God. However, when you have a gifted prophet amongst you, there is an additional sense of excitement and anticipation about what God might do! Let's be clear, we are not looking to Julian, we're looking to God. However, we do want to honour God's gift in Julian and also the gift that he is to the church. So let me encourage you to be praying for this morning that God might encourage both the church and many individuals within it. Don't be away, don't miss it - this is going to be one great Sunday! Jubilee Church Derby Fri, 19 Nov 2010 15:05:00 Jubilee gets blogging! http://www.jubilee.org.uk/blog/#2 Well, welcome to the brand new Jubilee blog! Family news and other things we want to share that are not "events" will go on here too. If you want to subscribe to this blog using a blog reader, the address you need is either http://jubilee.org.uk/blog.rss or http://jubilee.org.uk/blog.atom I will still be keeping my own blog at www.grahampyman.com which will contain more personal reflections and thoughts on leadership. So there you go, plenty to read! Check back soon for more from Jubilee Church. Jubilee Church Derby Thu, 18 Nov 2010 09:00:00
